In 1966, Gentry, Martin, and Daly, Barakat and Clark, respectively, introduced the application of upwind scheme in the solution of compressible and
unsteady laminar flow. The introduction of staggered network and upwind
difference of convection term laid a foundation for the numerical solution of
flow and convective heat transfer problems. In 1967, Patankar and Spalding
published the P-S method for solving parabolic flow.
In 1972, Patankar and Spalding put forward the SIMPLE algorithm,
which uses separate solution technology to solve the coupling problem of
velocity and pressure. The basic idea is: first solve a velocity component,
taking others as constants, and then solve other variables one by one; at
any level of iterative solution of flow field, the velocity field must meet the
mass conservation equation, which is a very important principle to ensure the
convergence of iterative calculation of flow field.
In 1974, the American scholars Thompson, Thames, and Martin proposed
the method of generating body fitted coordinates (TTM) using differential
equations. It provides a new way for the finite difference method and the
finite volume method to deal with the irregular boundary problems. The
irregular region in the physical plane (two-dimensional problem) is transformed to the regular region in the calculation plane by transformation, so
that the calculation is completed in the calculation plane, and then the results
are transferred to the physical plane. After the TTM method was put forward,
the branch of grid generation technology was gradually formed in CFD field.
Especially through numerical simulation and computer experiments, some
new physical phenomena had been found. For example, in 1965, Zabusky
and Kruskal revealed the conservation and particle properties of solitary
waves in KdV equation through numerical simulation. Since then, the existence of solitons had been found in many different fields through numerical
experiments; in 1968, Campbell and Mueller found the phenomenon of tilt
induced separation of subsonic velocity in computer experiments, which was
later confirmed by wind tunnel experiments. These findings make people
no longer regard numerical calculation as an auxiliary means of theoretical
and experimental research, but a subject direction independent of theory
and experiment. It could help people seek objective laws of complex flow
problems through numerical simulation.
Leonard published the famous quick format in 1979. This is a discrete
scheme with third-order accuracy, and its stability is better than that of the
central difference scheme. At present, the quick format has been widely used
in CFD Research and application.
With the further development of the computer industry, CFD develops
from 2 to 3D, from regular area to irregular area, from orthogonal coordinate
