16.2.4.4 The Hydrometric Monitoring Network
The hydrological monitoring activity of the river network from Apuseni Mountains is
done through a number of 58 hydrometric stations (Fig. 16.11). Observation programs
involve day-by-day level observation and indirect flow monitoring operations to
ensure run-off forecasts, respectively for rational management of available water
resources.
• Most hydrometric stations are associated with the Arie¸ s river basin (18 stations),
then Cris , ul Alb basin (13 stations), Cri¸ sul Repede (11), Some¸ sul Mic (6) and Cris , ul
Alb (4). The hydrological oriented activity is based also on nine meteorological stations, which provides additional background data related to precipitation amounts
and type, air temperature, air mass movement, wind conditions etc. (NIHWM
2013).
16.3 Water Resource in the Apuseni Mountains
16.3.1 Underground Water Resource
A detailed analysis of the distribution and capacity of aquifers/groundwater bodies
has led us to identify significant differences induced by conditional factors previously
studied (Fig. 16.15).
Thus, in areas with porous formations, local aquifers are distinguished or discontinued in pyroclastic rocks. Those underground deposits can be found in specific
areas belonging to the South-East and north-western parts of Metaliferi Mountains,
the North-East side of Zarand Mountains, Southern area of Codru-Moma and as an
insular appearance in the western side of Trasc˘ au.
Local aquifers in carstiferous rocks occur mainly in limestone and dolomite in
the southern and central part of Bihor Mountains and in the South-East of CodruMoma Mountains. Also, local aquifers are found in the limestone formations of the
Transylvanian Basin, related to the Northern side of Gil˘ au Mountains, the North-East
area of Trasc˘ au Mountains and the South-East and North-East of Mese¸ s Mountains.
In cracked rocks, there is an extensive network of productive aquifers found in
sandstone and marl, located at the contact between mountain groups Bihor, Muntele
Mare and Gil˘ au, in the Southern Codru-Moma Mountains and sporadically in the
Southern Plopis , Mountains, as well as in the North side of Mese¸ s Mountains.
Also, local aquifer networks or discontinued aquifers, often drained by springs
are found in the following formations and locations:
– limestone and calcareous sandstone in the Center of Metaliferi Mountains and in
the extreme North-East part of Trascau Mountains;
