and it includes several monitoring sub-points. A body of water may have one or more
monitoring stations, but the quality elements are monitored at the representative station [93].
The surface waters in Romania were evaluated as having a good or a better ecological status in a proportion of 64% (Fig. 2.5). Only 2% of the surface bodies of
water are in a low or bad ecological status. The chemical status of surface bodies of
water in Romania is good in a proportion of 93% (Fig. 2.5). Only 7% is evaluated as
having a low chemical status [93].
Measurements can be taken based on assessing the status, and they are submitted
to the approach of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube
River (ICPDR). The common program comprises measures with importance at basin
level, and it represents more than a list of national measures. The common program
includes specific measures for restoring the continuity of rivers, for reducing the
level of pollution from nutrients, organic substances, and hazardous substances. The
measures at the level of hydrographical sub-basin or body of water are featured in 11
management plans specific to sub-basins. The Romanian Waters National Administration is in charge of monitoring the implementation of the program of measures
(PM), as well as with reporting the stage of its implementation [93].
Agriculture is a source of point and diffuse source of pollution from nutrients,
organic substances, and hazardous substances. Agriculture pollutes through the animal farms that do not benefit from dejection recycling/storage facilities, through the
households without a sewerage system, through the use of fertilizers or pesticides,
etc. The capturing of the water for irrigations may represent a basin pressure.
The hydromorphological measures focus on restoring lateral and longitudinal
connectivity:
– reconnecting the lateral branches for the Lower Danube;
– the construction of retention basins;
– operational modifications for the pulsating effect of the waves;
