wood processing, Neamt , County, July 2018
By maintaining and developing forest areas, is obtained the increasing of water
retention in slopes, the decreasing of the flow rate and implicitly the increasing of
the infiltration into the soil [102].
Decreasing soil erosion, which leads to degradation of the slopes, clogging the
riverbeds and the storage basin of the lakes, it is another important role of the forest
that contributes to the decrease of the number of exceptional events as well as their
size (Fig. 9.17).
9.5 Conclusions
The pressure on forest resources is one of Romania’s biggest problems after 1990.
The low incomes of the population have made that illegal cut, for supplement revenue, to have a great scale. The lack of the general cadastral survey has made that
the evidence of forest areas to be uncertain, favoring illegalities in resource management. Encouraging export of woody raw materials, the uncontrolled development of
primary wood processing capacities and the tacit support from the authorities, for
the exploitation of wood, have led to the cutting of compact forest areas in a very
short time, without replanting on the deforested surfaces.
Under these circumstances, cutting the forest to nearly 400,000 ha has caused
major imbalances in ecosystems, changing the drainage of the water on the slopes
being the immediate consequence.
The zoning and the analysis of hydrological or physical-geographic parameters
can provide the premises for a detailed analysis of the processes taking place in a
