The statistical analysis of floods for a period starting from 1914, the year of the
establishment of Podari, shows that most of the floods (over 90%) are of pluvial
origin. On small tributaries, flood level elevations are given by rains that exceed
10 mm/24 h. On higher watercourses, rains that produce level increases and can
cause floods are those that exceed 30 mm/24 h, and over the main course of the Jiu
River, those that exceeds 40–50 mm/24 h. Among the most famous floods, there are
mentioned the ones from 1961, 1965, 1966, 1969, 1970, 1972, 1975, 1978, 1989,
1991, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006.
The most significant damages occurred in 1999 on the Jiu rivers (downstream of
the Motru confluence) and Motru (downstream of Padu¸ s) as a result of the floods that
affected an area of 53.52 km
2 , respectively 41.68 km
2 . The floods that affected the Jiu
basin in 1999, were born as a result of discharging of a very large amounts of water
generated by the displaced air masses from southwest Europe that were stationed
in the western part of Oltenia. Cumulative rainfall for July 11–15, 1999 measured
up to 212.8 mm at Tarni¸ ta pluviometric station and 243.9 mm at Tarmigani station,
Mehedin¸ ti County; 268.2 mm at Sise¸ sti station, 123.8 mm at Câmpul lui Neag,
respectively 125.7 mm at Valea de Pes , ti station from Hunedoara county; 191.5 mm
at Godines , ti station from Gorj county, 42 mm at Filias , i station and 53 mm at R˘ acari
pluviometric station from Dolj county.
In 1966 floods were flooded throughout Banat and culminated with the breakage
of the defensive dam on the Timis , river, left shore in Gad locality area. The known
cause of these floods was a large amount of rainfall falling on the surface of the basin.
This exceptional flood generated peak flows of 1100 m
3 /s in Lugoj and 1416 m
3 /s
at the S , ag. The floods from February 1999, were caused by floods of pluvio nival
origin and occurred in the Bega Veche, Bega (middle and lower basin), Timi¸ s (lower
basin), Pog˘ ani¸ s, Moravi¸ ta, Bârzava (middle and lower basin).
In 2000, due to the existence in the mountain and hill area of a consistent
snow cover, over which there were recorded large quantities of liquid precipitations
(120 mm in 24 h), the rivers came out of the riverbed. In April 2005, a pluviometric
surplus was recorded in Banat. In 2006, in April, rainfall exceeded the multiannual
average (10.4 mm at Cebza to 28.6 mm at Gataia). The nature of the precipitations
and the recorded water quantities led to the formation of a single flood on most of
the watercourses, a flood that had the effect of overtaking defense.
The flood produced in the upper basin of the Arie¸ s river from 10 to 15 March 1981
was produced because of intense and hot rains and the release of water from the snow
layer due to the sudden warming of the weather. Maximum-recorded debits: 35 m
3 /s
at Câmpeni, 860 m
3 /s at Baia de Arie¸ s, 820 m
3 /s at Buru and 780 m
3 /s at Turda.
Between December 1995 and January 1996, the floods produced in the Mure¸ s river
basin were due to precipitation in the form of rain and melting of snow in mountain
areas due to high temperatures (13–14 °C). The large rainfalls falling in the period
11.06.1998–20.06.1998 represent the cause of flood formation in 1998. The highest
recorded flows were 1660 m
3 /s in Alba Iulia, 1716 m
3 /s in Acmariu and 1660 m
3 /s
at Gelmar on Mure¸ s. The 2005 and 2010 floods were local, with torrent character,
generated by precipitation in the form of local avers.
