Fig. 5.3 Water supply sources for ancient city Tomis (blue dots) [18]
was found at 35 meters in depth. More other wells were also drilled in 1927 [19].
Despite these efforts, fresh water was currently brought in Constanta only around
The First World War facilities [24]. In 1948 there were drilled 27 wells at CarageaDermen source, out of which ten were equipped to be put in operation, the rest having
inadequate low flows.
During 1950–1957 the water supply system of the seashore was developed by deep
drillings carried out at Eforie-Nord, Eforie-Sud, and Techirghiol. A duct of 400 mm
in diameter and more than 30 km in length conveyed water from the Caragea-Dermen
source to Constanta city and further to the southern resorts on the Romanian Black
Sea coast. There were also built 2 × 1000 m
3 tanks and one 300 m
3 water castle at
Eforie-Nord and Eforie-Sud, 2 × 1000 m
3 tanks at Techirghiol and about 50 km of
distribution network.
From 1959 on, Mangalia had its own water supply facilities [24].
