5.1 Overview of Surface and Groundwater Resources
in Constanta County
Dobrogea, the land situated between big waters, as the lower Danube with its Delta
and the Black Sea, is a region deficient in surface water resources and precipitation.
The Dobrogea-Litoral water basin, Fig. 5.1, is located in the south-east of Romania. It is bordered by the Buzau-Ialomita basin to the West and by the Prut basin
to the Northeast. To the East, it is bound by the Black Sea and to the South by the
Bulgarian border.
The surface of the Dobrogea-Litoral water basin is 11,809 km
2 , covering Constanta County, Tulcea County and the Big Island of Br˘ aila.
Considering the region composed of the low Danube River, Danube Delta, and
Dobrogea Water Basin, 28 river bodies have been identified: 20 bodies are in the
natural state, three are heavily modified, and five are artificial. Out of these 28 water
bodies, 19 bodies have been monitored [22].
The rivers draining the surface of Dobrogea flow into either the Danube or the
Black Sea. Those flowing into the Black Sea are smaller in size than those flowing
in the Danube River.
