Although the socio-ecological transformation processes with all causes, effects,
and feedbacks cannot be comprehensively assessed, possible main threats to the
stability of the socio-ecological system have been identified:
1. Socio-ecological threats: The overuse of water resources through land use intensification and the simultaneous effects of climate change can lead to water scarcity and cause conflicts over water resources.
2. Socio-cultural threats: Negative impacts of global change in Agdz can be perceived as future obstacles to local culture and social cohesion, which could lead
to conflicts.

Observed change
Impacts on the environment
Physical and socio-economic
impacts
Ahwash ritual
Commercialization and
modernization
Classic frame drums and
tambourines are replaced
by western instruments
(Fig. 15.8c), which has an
impact on resource use in
the region and in the
countries of origin of the
instruments
Commercialization and
modernization entails the danger
of “despiritualization,” so that
social functions and thus the
cohesion of the community
could be weakened
Increased use of machine-made
instruments will have a direct
impact on local instrument
making and the tradition of
stretching the drumheads over
open fire
There is a danger that the
younger generation will adopt
an urban and western lifestyle,
and that the Ahwash will thus be
regarded as outdated; however,
the current trend is more in the
opposite direction
