The collective memory of the group has been formed through attitudes, and cognitive and effective practices. The group has its memory and discourse that allows it
to appropriate the monitoring activities and to affirm its identity as a group, as well
as cement their permanence in the community (Páez et al. 2007; Mendoza 2009).
Self-recognition is the reflective process by which a person acquires the notion
of his/her self and his/her own qualities and characteristics. Each member of the
group had his/her own process of self-recognition; however, the sense of belonging
to a group has supported this process.
Since their formation, they have faced challenges at a personal, family, and community level. Now “Women with Wings” are able to identify qualities that they did
not recognize before belonging to the group, such as the ability to achieve objectives
and the freedom to carry out interesting activities. Being housewives does not determine your level of competence. In relation to the gender roles established in their
families and in the locality:
(-I feel self-confident that, in spite of everything, you have plenty of time to do your
things, in spite of the children, the husband, being a housewife, having to do everything,
you can get ahead, you can do all your activities ...
-I feel useful, first of all, because it is another thing to do apart from housework and
attending your husband and children. You can do something else and I like that...).
Being part of this group that actively participates in conservation activities in the
community has generated self-esteem and created certainty about the importance of
the activities and their impact on the community and the family. Self-recognition is
also a reflection of the results in the community, of the interest, and acceptance of
the activities that the group performs:
(I feel important because people here are starting to be interested, they care about what
I know, if they have information about animals or what they know about them, they tell me
or let me know about it since they know I care for…).
The monitoring activities, the coexistence with other women, the acceptance and
recognition of the community give the women courage, decision power, and motivation to continue doing the activity that they like and that allow them to enjoy their
freedom:
-Mujeres: Porque andamos volando
