Solid Waste Management in Small Island …

were disposed at the only landfill in Mauritius, located at Mare Chicose. Besides
landfilling, recycling and home composting are practised to some extent. Based on
the waste composition in Mauritius, composting and anaerobic digestion seem the
two most feasible solutions to managing the high fraction of organics in the MSW
stream. Nonetheless, a solid waste management strategy should be developed and
implemented as this will help define the way forward with regards to solid waste
management in Mauritius as in other SIDS.
