• Targeted IEC activities, like street plays can play an important role in solving the
problems of usage of insanitary materials for hand washing. Private schools should
be encouraged to send their students to villages and conduct such activities with
the support of district administration.
4 Conclusion
Since Ghaziabad in most senses represent the majority of towns in India, it is safe
to assume that the conditions there also would not be much different than that of
Ghaziabad. If one compares the sanitation conditions of Ghaziabad previous to the
implementation of SBM, tremendous improvement can be seen, which is, without a
doubt, highly commendable. However, if one compares it to the data that is available
on the Swatch Bharat Abhiyaan Gramin Web site, there appears a gap in the reported
and the on ground realities of the same which is revealed by the survey conducted
for this report. If even small problems and gaps are identified by the district administrations in time and measures required to fill the gaps are taken up at the earliest,
India will definitely be free of the problem of open defecation by 2019.
