3.11 Chemicals and Safe Procedures. Dedicated Guidelines
61
The thermal action favors the action of thermoreactive products such as the
products used during the dry-scrubbing technique of floor surfaces.
3.11.3 Dilution
Dilution allows to reduce the concentration of a solution. As a basic principle of dilution, any chemical should be diluted according to the manufacturer’s
recommendations with the aim of reaching the maximum effectiveness.
There are two ways to dilute a chemical (Kenkel 1992; Stockwell 1996):
(1) Automated dilution. In this way, the use of a diluter is needed. Because of the
ameliorated control of the quality of dilution, this is the recommended strategy.
If possible, use diluents to have sealed chemical containers (better conservation). It is important to ensure the effectiveness of the dilutor by performing
solution tests periodically according to supplier’s recommendations. The risk
of splashing is very limited, representing a significant gain for the safety of
workers and customers. Cost controls are easier when speaking of automatic
dilution (if compared with manual dilution) through more efficient consumption
of chemicals.
(2) Manual dilution. There is a possibility of error in the dilution because of the
lack of precision (too diluted or too concentrated solutions). Either a graduated
container, a pump, or any other measuring device must be used in this ambit.
There is a significant risk of splashing the solution when pouring. The use of
protective equipment (e.g., glasses, gloves, and mask) may be necessary.
3.11.4 Technical and Organizational Preventive Measures
For all activities possibly presenting a risk of exposure to dangerous chemical agents,
the employer implements detailed safety measures as explained in the following lines
(Cohrssen and Covello 1999; Crowl and Louvar 2001):
(1) Limitation of the number of exposed workers
(2) Measurement of workers’ exposure, in particular with the aim of detecting
abnormal exposures resulting from an accidental event
(3) Collection of pollutants and ventilate the workplace
(4) Implementation of appropriate work methods and procedures
(5) Implementation of collective protection measures, and if that is not enough,
provide workers with personal protective equipment
(6) Ensuring basic hygiene
(7) Training for workers
(8) Delimitation and report actions concerning risk areas
