3 The Durable Management of Chemicals in the Food Industry …
Peculiar information concerning work safety should include:
(1) The indication of the concentrations of solutions, isomers, and components
of petroleum distillation products and reactive chemicals when these information may have an influence or be correlated with properties of the chemical.
A food-related example is the recommended dilution for cleaning solutions and
disinfection liquids when speaking of ‘cleaning-in-place’ (CIP) systems.
(2) The identification of any component present which is likely to contribute significantly to the properties of the mixture, or which exceeds the concentration limit
approved or recognized by the competent authority, in the case of mixtures.
(3) Similar information should be given in accordance with national requirements
and taking into account the United Nations (UN) recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods, when speaking of transportation. The information provided should not only inform the carrier about chemicals, but also provide easily
understandable indications to emergency services in the event of an emergency,
in which case these indications would also be useful.
(4) In the case of waste, the information provided should include the telephone
number of any person able to provide further information on the probable
composition of waste and on related risks (when complete labeling is not
available).
With peculiar relation to the last point, hazardous components of a waste should
also be indicated, as far as possible and whether they affect the properties of the waste
or exceed concentration limit agreed or recognized by the competent authority. The
container or packaging should be appropriately labeled.
Unfortunately, labeling of hazardous chemicals may be impossible due to the size
of the container or the nature of the packaging. In these situations, mobile labels
or accompanying instructions should always be used. In such circumstances, all
containers of hazardous chemicals should at least bear the hazard of the contents by
means of appropriate markings or symbols. All containers and all layers of packaging
should be labeled. The information given should be visible at all times on the container
or packaging at all stages of the delivery and use of the chemicals.
Labels of pesticide containers may include additional information in accordance
with applicable international guidelines such as those of the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on good labeling practices. This disposition is particularly important in relation to agricultural enterprises because of the
increasing amount of used pesticides worldwide.
3.7 Handling of Chemicals and Safe Logistic Procedures
Employers should ensure that, when chemicals are transferred to other containers or
equipment, workers are correctly informed on the identification of these chemicals,
and related risks/safety precautions, on the basis of the previous sections. When
chemicals are transferred to other containers or equipment for use on the employer’s
