which is a generic standard for structuring metadata (and less commonly, data) in a
fashion that is both machine-readable and human-readable, and also easily auditable against a community standard (e.g., ISO metadata standard). Federation is a
strategy for linking multiple repositories to enable sharing and search of diverse
databases while allowing the originators of the data to maintain control and ownership of data if they desire.
