Abstract Climate change education—CCE—is a new proposal for training, teaching and learning focused on sustainable development. CCE needs scientific support
for its insertion in the world context of schools, universities and other institutions.
Teachers are the key to the development and insertion of this theme in society.
According to 2030 Agenda, CCE contributes directly under two SDG’s: 4 (quality
education) and 13 (action against climate change). The aim of this paper is to describe
the relationship between sustainability and education, with a focus on climate change
education. To achieve this goal, the work was divided in three stages. The first one is
the theoretical analysis of the relationship between environmental education—EE,
education for sustainable development—ESD and education on climate change. The
second stage identifies the panorama of climate change education through bibliometric analysis. And finally, the third step describes the insertion of the CCE theme
for sustainable development in a public school in the south of Brazil. The results of
the study reinforce the importance of the theme, which has a direct impact on two
SDGs (4 and 13), since the teachers reported difficulties of inserting discussions and
approaches related to climate change education in the school context. In addition,
the work serves as an experience for future proposals with a focus on CCE.
