The simplest way to obtain soil samples from archive layers is the preparation of a
trench that is certainly limited e.g. up to 2 m depth. Here, grabbing a small trench
produces a quasi-outcrop and allows an accurate and thorough sampling of individual layers after visual inspection (Fig. 2.4).
