As Dr. Russell Mittermeier, Chief Conservation Officer of Global Wildlife
Conservation, has described, Suriname is now in a very strong position to sell the
best drinking water in the world to countries throughout the Caribbean that are
dependent on expensive and problematic desalinization. With a modest population
of approximately 563,000 people, Suriname has blazed a remarkable trail. Vanuatu,
Andorra, San Marino, and others are following.

present, these countries are ecological islands of sanity (Fig. 4.2).
