effective paradox response.”

Research into contradictory human nature has taken
a fascinating turn in one study that compared historic and contemporary Scottish
Highlands forest cover regrowth in light of “economic restructuring” that saw revenue from ecotourism outpace traditional heavy “industrial production”—with the
effect that “declining industrial power in the region is an inherently ecological one
that takes the form of ‘schizophrenic forestry,’ in which forest expansion leads to
the rise of degraded monocultures alongside ‘pristine’ sites of conservation.”

Such
ecological bubbles, juxtapositions both rude and reckless, represent the increasing
truth of human folly and inconsistency.
These diverse and troubling landscapes invoke an ambient mosaic of contradictions which, as we struggle to redeem ourselves in favor of all those kindred spirits
everywhere in the world, must re-invent an ethic, a lasting tenure of coherence (fair
housing, socialized medical insurance, urban renewal, green space planning, fair
and generous cooperation in every sector that will impact biological communities
and intergenerational equity, as examples) and that will rise to the occasion of
down-to-earth, non-violent policies for everyone. Animal liberation and conservation biology only really works if all animals and plants are included.
