Balthazar Ayala, echoed the famed author of In Praise of Folly (1511), pleadings for
an end to superstition and altercation, and the resurrection of restraint, law, international treaties, they were all to no avail. It would take the Dutch Jurist Hugo Grotius
(1583–1645) to concretize any plausible sense of a global codification of ethics,
setting certain ground rules that would ultimately prepare the way for international
environmental treaties.
