transformed, and depicted. Such representations span tens of thousands of years of
complex, largely undeciphered annotation. A transmogrification from soft and humble presence to that of imagined valor on a killing field. This dialectic—evincing the
divining rod of all paradoxes—continues to haunt not only art historians, but our
every move (Fig. 32.4).
