Colorado officials have approved seven new bills on renewable energy,
including a bill to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26% by 2025, 50%
by 2030, and 90% by 2050, using a 2005 baseline (Kohler, 2019). Energy
conservation, energy efficiency, water efficiency, extended tax credits for
EVs, charging stations for EVs, and solar gardens were included in the
legislation.
14.5 Wind Energy
There has been significant progress in the installation of new wind farms
to generate electricity in many locations, in part because the economics
around such installations have improved in the last ten years. In Kansas,
for example, approximately 36% of in- state electricity generation by public
utilities was from wind in 2018. This made Kansas first among the states in
the percentage of electricity generated by wind, and in the top five states
in terms of total wind generation (EIA, 2019). Kansas State University has
signed an agreement with its public utility, Westar Energy, to obtain about
50% of its electricity from wind energy. The new agreement is projected to
save the university $200,000 each year (Tidball, 2018).
