All buildings account for about 40% of energy consumption. Public education related to building energy conservation and efficiency has value as well
(Nejat et  al., 2015). More than 32 countries have building energy codes, so
further progress in establishing building energy codes has the potential to
reduce energy use in buildings by 50% (Nejat et al., 2015). Finally, in order to
dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with buildings, the
electricity supplied needs to be from zero- carbon sources such as solar energy.
10.5 Conclusions
Policies enacted to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality
have been very valuable in many cities, states, and countries. Progress has been
impressive but uneven around the world. China has been making great progress
to improve urban air quality through policy implementation. California has
improved air quality by implementing regulations that have reduced emissions
and by using incentives to encourage the transition to EVs. Norway has used
policies to increase the number of EVs that are purchased and used. Policies that
reduce carbon emissions by transitioning to renewable energy for generation of
electricity and EVs have health benefits because of better air quality.
