Chapter 18
Design and Implementation of Geospatial
Data Services for Agriculture
Lei Hu, Liping Di, and Peng Yue
Abstract With the rapid development of sensor and data technologies, the volume
of agricultural-related Earth observation data has been expanded exponentially.
Meanwhile, these data are tremendously diverse in terms of the format, sensor,
heterogeneity, and quality. Geospatial Web service technologies have shown great
potential to build the infrastructure for the collaborative sharing of distributed
resources; it is widely used in geospatial data system development for fulfilling the
requirements from different organizations. In order to maximize the utilization of the
agro-geoinformation, geospatial data service technologies could play a crucial role in
agricultural data planning, collection, curation, transformation, analysis, dissemination, cataloging, discovery, access, mining, visualization, quality control, privacy,
provenance, and long-term preservation. This chapter discusses how to design and
implement standard-based geospatial web services for the discovery, access, and
management of the agricultural data interactively at the diverse geographic level.
The agricultural data categories and life cycle are discussed. Emphatically, the
architecture of geospatial service, implementation of service functionalities, and
standardization are demonstrated. The solution of the agricultural data retrieval
efficiency is proposed.
