Examining TFP is the best way to get that information, which can be enormously
useful in identifying where improvements are needed in agricultural production systems, how to make investment decisions, and what policies support more productive
and sustainable agriculture.
2.3 Productivity and Innovation in Practice
For crops, improved TFP results from adopting innovations like higher-yielding,
pest-resistant, and/or drought- and flood-tolerant seed varieties. The growing bioinnovation sector includes precision use of microbes (bacteria and fungi) to help
crop farmers generate more yield on the same land. Microbes also protect plants
from dry conditions and increase yield, as well as protect plants from pests.
