In this chapter, we will review and summarize some of the works reporting the use
of microbial endophytes as biological control agents for different plant diseases and
their mechanisms of action. Finally, we will discuss the nutrient uptake/management
during biological control mediated by beneficial microorganisms.
2.2 Bacterial Endophytes as BCAs
Endophytic microorganisms can display one or more mechanisms of action toward
a specific pest or pathogen including direct interactions between endophytes,
pathogens, and their hosts and this is one of the reasons why the use of microbial inoculants has notable advantages against chemical treatments (Fig. 2.1). The
most commonly described mechanisms include inhibition of the pathogen by the
