as well as methods to label bacteria with trehalose probes. Many of these methods will be
relevant to research in different fields.
Drug discovery has become a much bigger field in the last decade, and so this edition has
several methods relating to testing compounds in model systems. These include determining minimum inhibitory concentrations, multi-stress models, testing against hypoxic cultures, efflux/permeability, high-throughput screening, high-content screening, the hollow
fiber model, and measurement of drug interactions (synergy or antagonism).
While it is not possible to include every method and protocol that has been developed,
we hope that these methods taken together provide the basics for any new research program
on mycobacteria.
We thank all of the contributors to this book who have given their time, effort, and
knowledge to prepare methods to share with the community. We hope that this volume will
help those starting out new with their mycobacteria research and those who have worked in
the field for decades.
