Palladium [Pd, 46]
Its salts should be included in dental screening patch test series. In jewelry, Pd should
be limited, until we know more about the risk of sensitization (Faurschou et al. 2011).
The allergenic potential seems to be associated with the ionic Pd species, which
form complexes able to react with endogenous proteins. A case of occupational asthma
has been reported in workers exposed to Pd in a galvanoplasty plants (WHO 2002a).
Palladium complexes are used efficiently in anticancer drugs. Its most important
properties are good solubility in water, the ability to transport (through the membranes), and fortitude in cells (Abu-Surrah et al. 2008).
Palladium contents in food are low, in general below 1 μg/kg (Table 32.1). The population dietary exposure to Pd in the United Kingdom in 1994 was from 0.7 to 1 μg/
day, in 2006. The greatest contribution to Pd exposure is from beverages (20%), cereals (13%), bread (12%), and potatoes (11%) (Rose et al. 2010).
