Air injected into aquatic environments has three basic functions:

(a) to provide oxygen, remove carbon dioxide and break down toxic
wastes-by its contact with the water; (b) to provide motive power
for the circulation of water by air-lift mechanisms; and (c) to induce

water movement and general turbulence. Ascending air streams also
provide an attractive and decorative feature. A“ typical installation is
shown in Figure 19.
