8.1. LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS
463
- Still water level
- Variations in sea surface elevation (waves)
- Particle grain sizes for movable-bed and tracer models
- Displacements of floating bodies
- Bottom changes in movable-bed models
- Rubble-mound structure profiles
- Beach or structure slopes
• Fluid Property Measurements pertain to the physical
properties of the fluid. Common fluid property measurements include:
- Fluid temperature
- Fluid density
- Salinity
- Dynamic and kinematic viscosity
- Surface tension
In some cases fluid properties are theoretically related to
fluid temperature, which is a simple property to measure.
• Fluid Motion Measurements pertain to the kinematic
and dynamic properties of the fluid motion, and typical
measurements for coastal engineering studies are the following:
- Fluid velocities
- Fluid pressure
- Wave period (or frequency)
- Discharge
— Wave runup and overtopping
• Force and Transport Measurements pertain to static
and dynamic forces exerted by fluids or gravitation on solid
objects. A few of the more common measurements include.
- Stone or armor unit weight
— Wave forces on structures
- Anchor and mooring line loads
— Strain and stress in concrete armor units
- Particulate or sediment transport
