Typical Short-Wave Model Scales
Length scales used in physical hydrodynamic models vary widely. Typical
scale ranges for a few examples are listed below:
• 2-d Wave Transformation - 1:10 to 1:50
• 3-d Wave Transformation - 1:25 to 1:75
• Breakwater Stability - 1:30 to 1:50
• Short-Wave Harbor Penetration - 1:50 to 1:150
• Forces on Solid Bodies - 1:10 to 1:50
The above scale ranges exclude studies performed at near prototypescale in very large facilities operated by several laboratories world-wide.
