Advanced Séries on Océan Engineering — Volume 47
Coastal Engineering
Theory and Practice
This book can potentially serve ‘as a comprehensive textbook for students pursuing this
subject either as degree or an elective course. It covers ail the fundamental physics behind
the different phenomena taking place in the near shore régions and the coast as well as the
various methods to estimate its impact. Basic knowledge of water wave mechanics is crucial
in understanding the Coastal processes taking place in the near shore. The assessment of
incident forces due to wind, wave, tide, current etc. is important to evaluate the résultant
impact they cause on the shoreline and structures.
This book emphasizes the importance of sédiment dynamics by analyzing the sédiment
characteristics, the physics of its motion and movement, factors responsible for the fate of
sédiments etc. It also highlights the érosion problem which is most prévalent across the sandy
coasts, additionally érosion combating methods and techniques are also described with real
time field problems and their solutions. A wide range of Coastal structures and their design
principles are included in this book in orderto give the readers a holistic understandirjg. This
book also includes the design challenges and introduces the reliable modeling tools and
techniques, which is very useful for beginners working in this discipline.
Vallam Sundar is currently an Emeritus Professer in the Department of Océan Engineering, Indian
Institute of Technology Madras. He has published about 500 conférence and journal papers and has
served as a member of several International Scientific Committees. He was chair of the Asia-Pacific
Division of The International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research, IAHR, from
2007 to 2011. He was invited by diffèrent German agencies as a visiting Rrofessor from 1992 till 2006,
wherein recognizing his contributions to teaching and research in Coastal Engineering, he was bestowed
with the prestigious honorary doctorale award by the University of Wuppertal, Germany. Apart from
receiving 10 other awards, he is also a récipient of the reputable JSPS (Japan Society for Promotion
of Science) Fellowship. Fie is one of the most sought-after consultants by governmental and private
agencies in offering solutions to a variety of problems in Coastal, harbour and océan engineering. His
graduate textbook Océan Wave Mechanics: Applications in Marine Structures (2016) is well-received
and acclaimed to project classroom teaching to real-time applications. His contributions were
acknowledged by the Indian Society for Hydraulics which conferred him with the “Lifetime Achievement
Award” in December 2018.
S. A. Sannasiraj is a Professer in the Department of Océan Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology
Madras. Since 2003, he has completed 14 research projects sponsored by various national and
international organizations. At présent, he is carrying out a major research project on climate change
impact on Coastal infrastructure along the Indian coasts. He has published 74 peer-reviewed journal
papers and participated in over 100 technical conférences. During the last 10 years, he was awarded the
DAAD Fellowship from Germany (2006) for tsunamic wave impact on Coastal structures; Indian Maritime
Award (2005-2006) for the prédiction of tsunami using data buoys; Endeavour India Executive Award
from the Australien Government (2007); Fulbright-Nehru senior research fellowship (2011) for modeling
tsunami impact on Coastal structures; and The Institution Prize by Indian Engineering Congress for a
technical paper in 2015. He has successfully executed more than 250 industrial projects of natural port
and harbours, intake/ outfall Systems, design of Coastal protection structures and wind-wave prédiction.
