4.6.3.5 Artificial beach nourishment
Pondicherry (or Puducherry) (11°59'51"N and 79O48'54//E), is a Union
Territory town bounded by the southeastern Tamil Nadu State and Bay of
Bengal (Fig. 4.27(a)). A pair of breakwaters was constructed in this Coastal
town to form a harbor. It requires maintenance dredging to be carried ont
throughout the year at the sand trap due to the prevalence of net littoral
drift of 0.6 million m3 along the east coast. If the maintenance dredging is
not carried out regularly, the channel will get closed, and significant érosion takes place on its north, which is the most populous stretch of the
city. A total quantity of 0.4 million m3 of sand was dredged from March to
October 2002 from the Southern side of the harbour, disposed on its north
through a submerged tunnel. The above details are projected in Fig. 4.27(b).
