Offshore wind power is still a relatively new form of renewable energy.
Industrial génération on the scale of a power station only began a good
ten years ago. In the last few years, the debate about offshore wind
power has been dominated primarily by the diverse technical challenges and several shifts in the underlying political conditions. However, in spite of and thanks to these trials and tribulations, the industry
has learnt much.
After this initial learning curve it is now ail the more important to show
that the offshore wind industry is capable of delivering projects to the
grid on time and within budget. The success story of the offshore wind
farm Butendiek provides an outstanding example of this capability.
The first turbines were able to feed electricity into the grid only eleven
months after construction started. This makes Butendiek the fastest
offshore project ever built without exceeding the cost budget.
As well as this financial success, the project has also set new standards in environmental protection. Using an ingenious noise mitigation System it has achieved the lowest noise émissions ever measured
during installation - this just being one example of many.
This book describes how this success was made possible. It is the
story of a determined developer, an untiring team, cooperative guthorities, expert suppliers, reliable investors and the way in which ail
these individuals teamed up to achieve a common goal: to generate
electricity for 370,000 households from the infinité energy of wind on
the high seas.
