For the construction of the Butendiek offshore wind farm, those
responsible not only piaced spécial importance to achieving low
noise mitigation values but also took further préventive measures to protect marine mammals. For example, deterring technigues were used where various acoustic devices were employed
before the pile-driving began in order to deter the marine mammals from entering the project area during pile-driving work by
emitting noises in the water. Employées of BioConsult SH piaced
these devices in the water before the relevant pile-driving work
began. On the one hand, so-called pingers and seal scarers were
used which give off acoustic signais at different freguency levels
and which were in fact developed in order to keep marine mammals away from nets in the fishing industry.
Ail in ail: the efforts to provide the best possible noise mitigation had a positive effect as the final noise report in the autumn of 201A clearly confirmed: the porpoises were not injured in
any way. Nevertheless, fishing biologists hope that the offshore
wind industry will not diminish its efforts to provide even better
noise mitigation in the future, wpd will certainly make its contribution to this goal.
Experimental investigations on the effectiveness of the seal
scarer showed that porpoises always try to make détours around
these noise sources at distances of more than two kilométrés.
The experts from Ballast Nedam were also successful in employing the "soft start method" when carrying out pile-driving
work. They started the ramming at minimum energy levels and
slowly increased the intensity up to maximum to give the animais
of the sea enough time to react accordingly to the increasing
noise levels.
