eddy kinetic energy (EKE), computed from surface drifter observations interpolated
every 24 h
of the bottom topography is felt very evidently in the MKE field, which increases
directly in correspondence of the reliefs, and there attains the largest values measured over the whole basin. The EKE shows a spatial phase shift of its maxima
with respect to the maxima in the MKE, and its peaks are located further downstream. This is also true for the smaller recirculation régions downstream of the
Campbell Plateau and of Drake Passage. On the contrary, as already mentioned, at
the Crossing of the East Pacific Rise at lower latitudes the field results much less
affected by the presence of the ridge.
