4 Conclusions
The velocity fields obtained from the model seem to be in good agreement both
with experimental observations and with theoretical studies commonly accepted
by the international scientific community. This is valid also for the vertical sections of température and salinity values. Still, the model assumptions could be
improved. For example, embedding an enhanced description of the sea-ice interaction, especially near the RIS area, should improve the accuracy of melting phenomena.
Velocity modules hâve been underestimated; more realistic values may be
probably reached using wind time sériés, which, at the moment, are being
acquired by authors: this is mandatory in order to start modelling the Ross Sea
seasonal variability. The topography also deserves another comment; the authors
received a more detailed and recent bathymetry from Jacobs [1], which could
change some important factors, such as the RIS edge latitude.
Acknowledgenients. The authors wish to thank the CLIMA Project, which operated in the second leg of the tenth Italian expédition in Antarctic in the person of
the coordinator, Prof. G. Spezie. Spécial thanks are given to Dr. A. Artegiani and
Dr. G. Budillon, for their helpful collaboration in the CTD data acquisition, to Ing.
R. Meloni and Dr. M. Ravaioli for the mooring data availability, and to Mr. G.
Arcari and Dr. F. De Biasio for supporting the data élaboration.
