measure a broad suite of parameters. Drifts and
biofouling must be overcome to achieve long-term
accuracy and the full economy float platforms. Biofouling may be significantly reduced when new cellular satellite communication reduces the time
during which floats must stay at the surface, but
one suspects much work lies ahead to both increase
the longevity of existing sensors and to expand the
variables that can be sensed with low-power, longlived sensors. This may well be the next frontier for
float technology.
