ONE HUNDRED YEARS MARINE MICROBIOLOGY-HISTORY AND FUTURE
DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT - Marine microbiology had its inception in 1884 with the publication by the French microbiologist
A. Certes on bacteriological investigations in the open ocean. Initially, observations were made on the
distribution of microorganisms in the marine environment and on the effects of various factors such as
temperature, pressure, salinity and others. Before the turn of the century the first investigations commenced
concerning the role of microorganisms in the recycling of materials in the ocean. Prominent in recent decades
were works regarding bacterial activity in the marine ecosystem and the participation of bacteria in the transfer
of energy in the food chain. The earliest marine microbiologists were already involved with microorganisms of
the deep sea, but especially interesting observations were only recently made on the mass development of
bacteria in regions of hydrothermal vents demonstrating entirely unfamiliar, fundamentally different biological
communities. The lessons from the history of marine microbiology as guides to future research are discussed.

The invention of the microscope by Antonie von Leeuwenhoek paved the way for the
discovery in 1683 of the first microorganisms in wafer. Some of the most important
scientists of the 19th century were involved with bacteria isolated from the sea. Spirochaeta plicatilis, isolated from seawater by Ehrenberg (1838), was one of the first thoroughly described forms. In 1844, Orstedt found Leucothrix mucor in the Sund near
Copenhagen, Cohn described Beggiatoa alba var. marina and Beggiatoa mirabilis in 1865
and Warming isolated two thiospirilli and one Achromatium species from the Danish
coast in 1875.
Organized microbiological investigations of the open ocean, however, were first conducted about 100 years ago. In 1884, A. Certes published the results of bacteriological studies
