studies on hard-substrata communities in the Marennes-Oléron bay. Consequendy, the three dominant zoological phyla are annelids (168 polychaetes and 5 oligochaetes), molluscs (3 polyplacophors, 156 gastropods,
3 scaphopods, 107 bivalves and 9 cephalopods) and arthropods (2 pycnogonids and 200 crustaceans) in the Pertuis Charentais Sea.
Discussion and conclusion
At the end of the 19th century, a first synopsis on marine and terrestrial
fauna in the Charente-lnférieure was proposed by Beltrémieux (1884).
However, numerous zoological studies and taxonomical revisions have
occurred since then. The latest synopsis of de Montaudouin & Sauriau
(2000) appears to be of central importance in our current knowledge of
the species richness in the Pertuis Charentais Sea. The Marin-Pertuis database, which is based on the synopsis, still remains a preliminary checklist, because most published studies focused on soft-bottom communities. Further effort should be made to describe hard-substrata
communities within the Pertuis Charentais Sea. This will enable comparisons of species richness and biogeographical origin of species between ecosystems of similar size, e.g. around Roscoff, the bay of Brest,
the gulf of Morbihan and the Arcachon and Thau lagoons.
