Both species of megrims disappear at the mouth of the most important
rivers, probably due to the occurrence of continental run-off. The most
abundant species in the French area of the bay of Biscay is
G whifjiagoms, but its distribution seems to be restricted to the extemal
shelf. This is due to the influence of the continental discharge from
Loire and Gironde cstuaries, detected bv low salinity values in figure 2,
that acts mainly by modifiing the composition of the bottom which
megrim depends on to feed and which becomes more appropriate for
other flatfish, like Dicologoglossa cuneata, adapted to estuarine conditions.
