Abstract
Biolumincscencc is a photon emission provoked by a chemical reaction.
Produced in the marine environment by a wide variety of vegetal and
animal planktonic organisms, bioluminescence occurrence reflects the
biological richness of an ecosystem. Among phytoplankton, only dinoflttgellates are able to emit light. Simultaneous analysis of fluorescence as
an indicator of chlorophyll concentration and bioluminescence can give
information about thc type of predominant organisms, particularly concerning the well-known succession between diatoms and dinoflagellates in
temperate waters. Bioluminescence measurements have been made with
an on-board instrument which can detect light emissions of organisms
smaller than two millimetres. Associated to a CHÜ probe as an additional sensor, the whole gives simultaneous vertical profiles of bioluminescence, fluorescence, temperature and salinity. Measurements performed in April indicate high values of bioluminescence. No significant
correktion have been demonstrated between biioluminescence and chlorophyll a concentration. Peridinin measurements at a transect near
Belle-Île Island revealed a good correlation between vertical distributions
of this pigment used as a dinoflagellates marker, and bioluminescence.
South area of the bay is rich in bioluminescence, and occurrence of
strong nycthemeral variations suggest the presence of heterotrophic dinoflagellates, photoinhibited during light hours.
