ABSTRACT - Eutrophication - Le biological response of aquatic Systems to overenrichment by anthropogenic
nutrients - can no longer be considered as being limited to freshwater ecosystems, such as lakes and rivers.
During the last twenty years, there has been a growing evidence, on a worldwide basis, that some Coastal marine
ecosystems could be severely disturbed by the increase of nutrients loadings from land. In very shallow areas,
eutrophication is mainly due to prolifération of green macroalgae (ulvae, enteromorphae, cladophorae...) and
causes severe problems for the recreational use of some sandy beaches and for the préservation of Mediterranean
lagoons. In front of several estuaries, especially in zones with long résidence times ofwater masses, phytoplankton
production has been considerably enhanced, leading to endemic bottom hypoxia, with numerous dramatic anoxie
épisodes. The increase of blooms of toxic Dinoflagellates may also be indirectly related to eutrophication. Scientific
study of Coastal eutrophication may help designing restoration and protection strategies, by evaluating the natural
sensitivity of various géographie zones, finding the limiting nutrient that must be controlled and forecasting the
effects of various réductions of terrestrial inputs.
