ABSTRACT - Organic matter and nutrient loadings hâve been studied in raw and treated sewages from two urban
wastewater treatmentplants, one using aphysical-Chemical unitprocess (Toulon-Est), the other using a biological
unit process (Morlaix). In addition to the classical COD, BOD, TKN déterminants, we analysed various Chemical
species or forms of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous of environmental importance. Percentage removals of C,
NandPconfirm the superiority of biological upon physical-Chemical processes for C and N treatment while the
opposite is observed for P treatment. The overall efficiency of the processes has been evaluated in relation with
the global enrichment of the aquatic medium, assuming the conversion of inorganic N and P into phytoplancton
biomass. In such terms, the efficiency appears to be in the range 40-50 % for the biological process (whichever
the limiting factor - N or P - considered) and respectively 11 % and 60 %, relating to N and P limitation, for
the physical-chemical process.
