ABSTRACT - Enteric viruses, specially Hepatitis A virus and gastroenteritis viruses are recovered in urban sewage
and may pollute estuarine water in bathing and shellfish area. Moreover it has been shown that shellfish are often
at the origin of Hepatitis A and gastroenteritis outbreak. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of sewage
discharge and the virological quality of Coastal water in an Atlantic bay (Morlaix, France) and a Mediterranean
site (Toulon, France). In Morlaix estuary, from l.ltf to 70.106 enteroviruses are discharged per 24 hours by urban
wastewater ; into Toulon effluents introduced between 10 and 95 viral particles per Hier. Viral contamination has
been detected also in river or estuarine sédiments from 7 to 103 PFUH 000 g in the bay of Morlaix. As sédiments
are very easily suspended in water and carried downstream, they may hâve an impact on shellfish microbiological
quality. Results obtained with shellfish concern the presence of Hepatitis A virus, quantification of enteravirus and
effect of dépuration treatment on persistence of enteroviruses.
