species to species. Reported drinking rates range from less than 50 ml to
over 300 ml/kg/24 hr. There appears to be approximately 75% absorption
of the ingested volume. It is clear from the published data, however, that
the rate at which the environmental water is drunk is considerably higher
in marine fish than in freshwater fish (H. W. Smith, 1930; Sharrat et al.,
1964; Motais and Maetz, 19655; Skadhauge and Maetz, 1967; Oide and
Utida, 1968). The large variation may be caused by a number of factors.
Individual species may obviously have different permeabilities to the passive outflux of water across permeable surfaces and hence have greater
