The test is thin being only ubotit I e7.5 t r i m in thiaknesn, r t t d has a
proteinaceous outiale bearing smd1 sjincs. The rnaiti body of the twt
has bundles of fibres arranged I)arallel with one another about 15 p
apart and joined to one another by srnall bridges of fibres. All of this is
embedded in a matrix which contains granular cells w’hich rupture their
contents between the fibres and finally disappear. Stibvenart suggests
that this type of formation provides ti supple but very strong structure.
As in I€. uurnntium the fibres are secwtctl from the mantle epidermis.
