mantle is often thick particularly in forms like Kuphus. In Neoteredo,
Bactronophorus and Nausitora, all mangrove or brackish water genera,
the mantle is comparatively thicker than in other genera (Turner, 1966 ;
Saraswathy and Nair, 1971). In cross sections of the animal, the mantle
on either side of the median line in Bankia indica and B . gouldi shows
