as follows: one in each eye stalk, one pair at the bases of the second
pair of thoracic limbs, a further pair at the bases of the seventh pair
of thoracic limbs, and a single photophore lying between each of the
first four pairs of abdominal pleopods. Stylocheiron species have the
eye and the posterior pair of thoracic photophores but only one
abdominal photophore, between the first pair of pleopods. The histology
of the photophores has been described by Vallentin and Cunningham
