visual golds or deep-sea rhodopsins, occur in the rods of deep-water
oceanio fishes from the twilight (mesopelagic) zone, e.g. bathypelagk
sharks (Centrophorus squamom), chimaeroids (Hydrolugus ufinis) and
teleosts (Gonostoma elongatum, etc.). Rhodopsins contain retinene,,
derived from vitamin A,, and exhibit maximal absorption around
500 mp. Chrysopsins also contain retinine,, and have maximal absorption in the blue, around 485 mp (Figs. 5 and 6). Porphyropsins contain
