It is important in the present state of ecological development that
adequate attention is paid to methods. These should be described in a
form sufficiently detailed to allow a reader to make an adequate judgement about their reliability. It is hoped that the attention to practical
detail which is given in all four contributions, will be of value t o advanced students who are faced with the problem of designing certain
types of research programmes.
